Container gardening — I’m sure you’ve heard the term. But what exactly is it? When some people think about container gardening, they often come up with images of little plants growing in little plastic containers on a shelf. While that would indeed technically be considered container gardening, you’re missing out if you think that’s all container gardening has to offer.
What is Container Gardening?
Container gardening is the art of growing plants in containers. Those containers could be small little pots or elaborate stone urns. Decorative or mundane, container gardening can be as spectacular as you want it to be.
Choosing Your Containers
While it’s true that container gardening can be tailored to meet your personal decorative tastes, there are some things you need to look for in good gardening containers.
First and foremost, make sure you have the right size. While small little pots are adorable, they won’t do you much good if your plants outgrow them. Make sure your container gardening pots range somewhere in size between 10 and 150 quarts.
The shape of your containers are also important. Containers with openings that are too narrow can inhibit the growth of your plants and they won’t flourish. Make sure your container gardening containers have adequate openings to accommodate the needs of your plants.
Also make sure the containers you use for container gardening have adequate drainage holes. Each hole should be a minimum of half an inch and there should be enough of them to allow for proper drainage.
Placing Your Containers
When arranging your container gardening containers, pay close attention to the sunlight needs of the plants you’re growing. You’ll want to put the containers for the plants that need direct sunlight in wide, open areas and the plants that need shade will need to go in the nooks and crannies of your container garden.
Watering Your Plants
When you begin container gardening, remember that potted plants tend to need more water than plants planted directly in the earth. Because of this, you’ll want to water your plants frequently to ensure they don’t dry out.
Container gardening can be a worthwhile venture. Just make sure you plan properly and with the right care and the right containers, your container garden will flourish and thrive.
