New Allotment Garden Rises in Lapasan

With the generous financial assistance of the Provincial Government of East Flanders and the Sint-Amandsberg Allotment Garden of Gent, Belgium, a new allotment garden for 12 families is presently being established in sitio Hill Site, barangay Lapasan.

It took a long time to find a suitable area, but with the assistance of Barangay Chairman Antonio S. Olango, an area was finally found in sitio Hill Site and the private landowner convinced to make the area available for this noble purpose.

The area is very accessible and suited from an agronomic perspective. The water level is very shallow which allows easy well digging. In addition, the local community is already involved in small gardening activities.

The establishment of the garden is coordinated by PUVeP technician Clarito “Turok” Santos Jr., who is spending his semestral break in Cagayan de Oro, before returning to continue his masteral studies in Germany by mid of October. He already earlier established successfully allotment gardens in cooperation with the communities of Kauswagan and Tibasak in Macasandig. After facilitating the first lectures on allotment gardening by end of August 2008 and initiating the land preparation shortly after, the first beds were completed and the first crop – kangkong – was already sown few days ago.
