CSU introduces veggie planting technology

by Oliver T. Baccay

TUGUEGARAO CITY, October 11 (PIA) — To help communities establish their own backyard gardening, especially in the urban areas, the College of Agriculture, Cagayan State University-Lallo campus is introducing technologies in vegetable planting.

Dr. Bienvenido Domingo, dean of the college, said they have been assisting in the establishment of barangay nurseries of the said town in planting vegetables and medicinal plants in improvised pots using plastic water containers.

Domingo explained that they have successfully researched for a technology in planting vegetables using the plastic water containers and using soils with organic fertilizers.

“We have proven that this technology is effective. As you can see, these vegetable plants are healthy and with abundant fruits”, Domingo said referring to his red pepper, eggplant, okra and other vegetable plants as their research center.

He also stated that there were already some adaptors of their technology, especially those living in unfertile soil, flood prone and without enough area to plant directly on the soil.

Aside from the less cost on the use of fertilizer, Domingo stated that the plants are also heat resistant because the stored water at the bottom of the container will be absorbed by the plant.

“We are also very willing to assist other sectors and groups if they need our assistance to introduce them this technology because our thrust is to help provide food to every family,” Domingo stated. (TCB/OTB/PIA-2)
